Sky Extreme Thailand and Bird Paradise Airpark High Altitude Descent Information for Tandem Passengers and Solo Skydiver
Introduction
This course is designed to inform you of:
1. The increased safety risk associated with descents from higher altitudes and equipment failure.
2. Management of Risks, including the use of oxygen equipment.
3. Symptoms of hypoxia.
Risks of High-Altitude Parachuting
Although precautions are taken to reduce the effects of increased altitude, there are added risks associated with skydiving from higher altitudes compared with lower altitudes, including: reduced oxygen (hypoxia), exposure to colder temperatures, higher speeds and the potential for added stress on your body and the equipment.
Skydiving from above 13,000 feet Above Mean Sea Level (AMSL) is not recommended for anyone suffering from cold/flu, sinus discomfort or pressure, hangover, diarrhea, headache or certain injuries.
You must inform a staff member if you experience any of the symptoms mentioned above.
Management of Risks
For Tandem passengers:
The use of supplementary oxygen is required for all descents above 13,000 feet AMSL. Your tandem instructor will instruct you when and how to place the supplied mask onto your face, and will ensure a secure fit. You must continue using the mask until you are told to remove it by your tandem instructor or another staff member. You must comply with your tandem instructor’s instructions at all times.
For solo skydivers:
The use of supplementary oxygen is required for all descents above 13,000 feet AMSL. Masks are available for purchase at the Front Office. The S&TA, CI or SAD will instruct you before boarding when and how to place the supplied mask onto your face, and will ensure a secure fit.
Oxygen flow starts at 8,000 feet AMSL. You must continue using the mask until the red light on the aircraft door switches on or you are told to remove it by your instructor or another staff member. You must comply with you instructor’s instructions at all times.
Symptoms of Hypoxia
Some of the effects of Hypoxia (lack of oxygen) are listed below. You must alert your Instructor or a staff member if you experience any of these symptoms at any time in the aircraft, e.g., by tapping their leg to get their attention and pointing at the mask.
Fatigue, Headache, Clumsiness, Hyperventilation, Blueish fingernails, Poor memory, Poor reasoning / judgment, Loss of time awareness, Emotional outbursts, Loss of muscular control, Euphoria (irrational sense of wellbeing), Dimming — blurry vision or tunnel vision, General slowness of thought, Fixation on unimportant tasks.
NOTE: A complication of hypoxia is that you may not be aware of the onset of symptoms. Your Instructor and all staff members on board have completed a more comprehensive high altitude descent course and are trained to monitor you for any symptoms of hypoxia.
By signing/accept below, you acknowledge that you understand the information in this form and accept the increasing risks of skydiving from a higher altitude.
Camera Waiver and Camera-Briefing, Regulations and Recommendations
General
a. Prior to jumping with a camera, a skydiver should have enough general jump experience to be able to handle any skydiving emergency or minor problem easily and without stress.
b. A camera flyer should possess freefall flying skills well above average and applicable to the planned jump.
Suggested Experience
Sky Extreme Thailand and Bird Paradise Airpark recommend a USPA C license or equivalent as minimum experience before doing camera jumps.
As USPA B-license holder (or equivalent) you can waive the suggested experience level
Requirements: Current skydiver, Freefly friendly equipment (NO STUDENT RIGS), visual and audible altimeter, hook knife, snag-prove camera mount using one GoPro.
Note: | Malfunction, serious injury, or death could occur if the lines of a deploying parachute become snagged on camera equipment. Each camera flyer should regularly practice all parachute emergency procedures in a training harness while fully rigged for a camera jump. |
Priorities: | The priorities on the jump should be the parachute equipment and procedures first, then the camera equipment and procedures. |
Preparation: | Be completely familiar with your camera equipment and procedures. Plan your skydive accordingly — your deployment altitude should allow time to deal with the additional equipment and its associated problems. Be focused on your lifesaving equipment during gear up. |
Boarding: | Get a gear check before boarding. |
Exit: | Get ready and do the last equipment check as usual. Switch the camera on after you completed your handles checks. Prevent getting hit by door components during climb out. |
Freefall: | Do NOT be focused on what and how you film. BE FOCUSED ON YOUR SKYDIVE! The camera is always secondary during the skydive. |
By signing below, you acknowledge that you understand the information in this briefing and accept the increasing risks of skydiving with camera equipment
